Faith and Holiness

One uber-crucial thing we achieve by running the gospel race - We prove our faith! According to Paul's letters, it's a basic requirement for a believer to announce the gospel. It's a test of faith. And another important purpose of our gospel work would be to discharge our priestly duty. Yes, the Bible declares every true Christian a priest. And performing this priestly duty is the way to attain holiness.

Gehenna – Lake of Eternal Fire

The Greek word Gehenna is translated as hell 12 times. If Gehenna denotes hell, we can actually book a flight and go to hell! Yes, it’s a real place in Israel. That’s why translations like YLT render it as Gehenna instead of hell. When Jesus says ‘the fire in Gehenna’, it’s like a New Yorker saying ‘the water in Brooklyn’! The Valley of Hinnom, named Gehenna in Greek, lies just outside the city of Jerusalem. During Jesus’ time, it was the city’s garbage burner. Its fires were kept continually burning (everlasting fire).

Trinity enters Christianity – The History

The advent of Gnostic theories triggered Apostle John's forceful response that Jesus was the very Word of God - the mighty Logos. Seen in light of that historical context, John's books take on a whole new meaning. After apostles died, history shows people gradually elevating Jesus from Son of God to God's Equal as a counter-measure to the Gnostics. Much later in the 4th century, we see politics play a role in setting up a Creed where Jesus is declared God. The concept of a trinity i.e. Holy Spirit also being deemed God, enters in the 5th century.

Pentecostalism

Pentecostalism is a 19th century movement with a main focus on experiencing miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit like speaking in tongues. Today many think the gift of tongues is to speak unintelligible words because that’s what people see in Pentecostal churches. But was that the case when the Early Church got this spiritual gift? First of all, what was the reason God gave such gifts to the believers? And what was the purpose of other miraculous gifts like healing and personal prophecies?

Share Christ’s Sufferings

Paul writes - Now if we are children, then we are heirs —heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Romans 8:17. That sounds fair. Only if we participate in the sufferings of Christ would we get a share in his glory. What kind of sufferings did Jesus face? Is suffering like Christ only meant for the Apostles?

Tartaroo – Bad Angel Lockdown

The Greek word tartaroo occurs only once in the Bible and has been translated as hell. "God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast [them] down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment." (2 Peter 2:4). – Here, the entire phrase ‘cast down to hell’ is translated from the one Greek word tartaroo. Some misuse this verse to support a netherworld where fallen angels and sinners are held forever. But there are obvious problems with that view.

Why is this Important?

The Scriptures declare, ‘yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live’ (1 Corinthians 8:6).
And that God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son [Jesus], that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’ (John 3:16).
We need to worship and praise the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father (Ephesians 1:17) and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Phil 2:11).
But why is this so important?

Morality Police

Most young people are disenchanted with today’s Christian churches as they see a widely prevalent ‘holier than thou’ attitude and a judgmental mentality among churchgoers, irrespective of their denominations. Do the teachings of Jesus support such an attitude? Are his true followers supposed to align with him or should they imitate the Pharisees who called Jesus a drunkard because he wined and dined with sinners?

Doing Good & Preaching Truth

Those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves and continue to do good.1Pet 4:19. Peter says we need to do good. But the Bible deems all the so-called good things of this world as meaningless (Eccl 1:14, 2:1). So what good can we truly do to someone? Also some ask the question - Why do we need to tell the gospel to the world now? Won’t they just hear it in the Kingdom? Many just reject it in present times, don’t they?

Weeping & Gnashing of Teeth

Didn’t Jesus talk about a place where there would be weeping and gnashing of teeth? This expression is found in seven places - Matthew 8:12; 13:42, 50; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30, Luke 13:28. This is heavily symbolic as Jesus uses it only in a parable or a symbolic statement all seven times. Its meaning differs based on the context. But its general sense in all the places is – a finite period of punishment/trial for a group of people who have erred in God’s sight.
